Friday with no (only one) field trips

So how this program is written is that every Friday we either have off or our on field trips. Today I only had one field trip in the morning and planned to stay there after the tour. My trip was to Senate House Library , which is a stunning 7+ story building. I have never seen a library that was so intense. Every floor had 2 layers and each room its own separate subject matter. After the tour I got my library card and got to work on homework and reorganization-the rumor going around our group is that I have all of my work done for Monday, which I am pretty sure I do but our online classroom crashed for me so I can't check. That is fun because I didn't start the rumor but not important. My favorite part of the library that I have discovered so far is the Periodicals and Journal room. The walls are filled with journals from different areas of the world and subject matter and the middle has a mix of leather couches and tables with outlets. After I finished my work, I wandered b...

Pressure by David Haig

https://www.theambassadorstheatre.co.uk/online/default.asp?doWork::WScontent::loadArticle=Load&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::article_id=920E9736-95D2-4462-A499-BB5581C45F18 The Show: Pressure The Playwright: David Haig The Theatre: The Ambassadors This play encapsulated the 65 hours before the D-Day attack in a relatively fast 2 hour production. After reading the script, I noticed some differences in the production that I saw and that written. Primarily there was more swearing and secondly the ad-libs based on integrated technology- for instance they all look out the window and see a plane be hit and crash. It may because I am a theater nerd but I greatly enjoyed the show and its historical accuracies. I was less of a fan of the costuming but I understand that it was historically accurate. I wanted to see the main female character in a pantsuit but instead she was put in a very feminine army uniform. Their emotions and stresses were felt even by those who knew what the o...

QUICK RECAP of 30/8/18

Hi Everyone, I lied when I said there would be no post. I just got back and it feels wrong to go to bed without writing here- I guess this is what keeping a diary feels like? Today was a good day. I woke up early to finish a couple of assignments that were due and then I had Imagined London and Theater. Both had some great discussions today based on quite difficult readings. What I am writing next will be left brief because I need to sleep and there will be more tomorrow, but I just saw the play Pressure  and I have a lot of thoughts... so keep your eyes open. On that note, Good night Sleep tight and Don't let the Narwhals bite

Second Day of Classes

Image
Good Evening So I need to explain an assignment in order to explain my day. For my seminar we have random flash writing assignments and these are graded for completion but returned with insight on our writing. I got the assignment Tuesday and it is due tomorrow. It is a one page paper on a piece of art or collection of art from the Museum of London. So this morning, I woke up and went to the museum before class. The museum is incredible! it is essentially a timeline of all of British History from the Romans to Today. I only made it to the end of the Medieval Era, which in my opinion is sad and I am going to try to go again when I have more time. However the piece below is the one that I wrote about. It is a brooch from the medieval era. I may share the paper later but I may not... who knows? :) After the museum I had...  Ethnic Tapestry This class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:20-1:20. Today we went over expectations and then went over the big themes of this cour...

First Day of Classes!!!!!

Today was my first day of classes and it has been one of the longest days that I've experienced in a while, but overall it was a really good day. Before class, Heidi and I went for a walk along the canal and it was stunning! Imagined London This class runs from 11:20-1:20 every Tuesday and Thursday. This class is also my Scribner Seminar so the teacher is a Skidmore Faculty. Today we went over the syllabus and finished discussing or summer reading, Exit West . We then generally discussed why we all came to London and what we were hoping to find while here. I then left and wandered the Main Street then a small squad of us went and ate in a park nearby. Theater  This class also runs on the Tuesday-Thursday Schedule but from 2:50-4:50.  This was actually quite interesting but the teacher's voice is a little monotone and he is the most British man I may every meet.  I just finished an article for the class about theatre criticism and there is a lot more to the review...

The Picnic and the hunt

So today we had a picnic with our Skidmore Faculty to discuss our summer reading. I really enjoyed hearing everyone's thought but I wish we had been in a smaller group then 40 people. I am looking forward to talking more about it in class tomorrow. As for the scavenger hunt... I was less of a fan. Partially because I am at the point where I just want to explore with friends and partially because one person in our group was bossy and rude (and it wasn't me). We ended up at Trafalgar Square to take pictures with the lions and she was trying to hurry us there but there were live musicians so everyone else wanted to stay and listen. I eventually told this person that we should wait 2 minutes or so and I think she actually set a timer because she turned to me and said it's been 2 minutes. We ended up waiting until the song ended but she was very annoyed with us. Oh well- Don't have to be friends with everyone. Then I called home to talk with daddy and Belinda. Finished so...

Days 3 and 4

So Yesterday was a very productive day and today was not. Yesterday, I got up and worked out and then showered. A group of us went to Brick Lane which has a bunch of markets which are connected together. I love myself a good market. Most of the Brick Lane Squad didn't buy anything but Eddie and I both bought something from this graphic designer. Eddie got two t-shirts and I got a piece of art. It is a semi accurate sky line mixed with a robot and different marine life interfering with the city-I love it so much I think it is so original. We then went and got food from some stalls. I got this amazing Lemon Fried Chicken and fries. Henry got tenders and fries with a black sauce that looked a lot like a face mask but actually tasted really good- we think it was a black garlic and honey. We then got back and I started to decorate my wall (don't worry, I will post a picture later) and then got dressed for our trip. We went on a bus/walking tour of London-it included the stuff tha...

London for 48+ Hours

Image
So I have been in London for +/- 48 hours. It has been a great time and it has definitely confirmed to me that I have made the right choice. As you read on I will note generally my experiences from these past hours. DAY 1 We landed at around 9 on Thursday.  We then went through immigration and waited for everyone else by the baggage claim. I was one of the first ones through, which was awesome because I got to sit down-it was so tiring.  It then took us 1 hour to get to the apartment and we all sat on couches so that they could check us in. About halfway through the check in process one of the IES staff members came with food( thank god). After we checked in, we had about an hour and a half in the dorm to settle in and un pack.  At 3:30 I had my housing orientation and it basically recovered all the information we learned at Skidmore.  At 4 we went on a brief tour of Angel, the neighboring community, then Morgan and I walked to Primark, a clothing/home g...

Driving to Skidmore

Hi Everyone, We are doing another timed post. It is currently around 9 pm but this will be posted around 7:45 am. I will be driving to Skidmore with Mommy and Jonathan. I am excited to be leaving and going abroad but I am nervous and have cried a fair amount. I keep going through waves where it all feels so real to nothing is actually happening. I will post more when I have time but I don't know when that time will come. It may not be until I am settled into my London Life. Goodbye, Good Morning, and Good Evening

The Endless List and Packing it all

Image
So I leave for Skidmore in 5 days and for London in 8 days. 5 days or 120 hours or 7,200 minutes. Either way it is not a lot of time and there is a lot of things to do. I have a sheet full of things that need to be done that I am slowly making my way through. None of the things are hard but each kind of feels momentous as it is the last thing. Packing is the worst. I don't want to overpack but I also definitely can't afford to under pack. I think I am going to over pack but not by a ridiculous amount. During this process, I have channelled my inner Dory with the following.

Home

Last night I drove home from camp after my last day of this summer. I cried way more than I was expecting and I haven't even opened any of my secret buddy gift. This summer has been incredible and I am not sure that I would change anything at all. I will post more later today but I have just gotten up.

The Lasts

Today was my last day of day camp and it marked the middle of a series of ends and lasts. I don't know how to feel about it. Part of this summer has flown by but the rest has crawled through at a snails pace. Despite my conflicted feelings, it was definitely the right decision to come here.

The Artists and Their Struggle

This week Harmony and I are working with the artists in Sleepy Hollow. We initially had 13 children but we have now been bumped up 14, which made our trip off camp very complicated. This new camper was also going into 10th grade whereas my youngest is going into 6th grade. I think that I love these kids but they are quite the handful. This week we have done a lot of art and art related things such as... Dream Catchers Candles Crayons Tiedye Archery Tiedye Self portraits Model magic  Museum Trip and Sketching
