Tornado Warning, Tornado Touchdown

I am going to preface this blog post with I am OK and that this story has a fine ending. In 5th grade there was a book we read. I don't remember the title but it was about this town that was hit with 7 tornadoes over the course of 24 hours. And I thought about this book (or at the very least the pieces I remembered) a good amount during the last 48 hours or so. The narrator spends the first chapter talking about red letter days, he phrases them like they only come around once in a while but are the days that you will never want to forget, and black letter days, the worst moments that you want to forget but never really can. This session has been a lot like that but in moments instead of days- amongst all the chaos there are definitely things that I never want to forget! If you haven't heard, Cape Cod was hit with two tornadoes over the course of Monday and Tuesday, We are all okay and the camp is mostly okay (our incredible site manager has finished almost all of the repair...

The one with the raccoon*

Since we last left off, I had a wild sticky messy week with Day camp and it was so nice to just be with kids. I then had 36 hours off and came right back to being a UL. I worked primarily with a sailing group and a combo marine biology/boating group. It was a weird week and I really just felt like an extra set of hands than a helpful supervisor but I think that is because people still had to take their days off. This upcoming session I am the UL for the samplers (brownies and juniors who are only here for two days) and the s’maco bake off and I am so excited. I think it is going to be a really fun week!  Now you may be wondering what the title is about. Well during the second week, I still lived in Newport with the bikers but the bikers went off on an overnight. While they were gone me and another staff member went to the pavilion so Could charge the walkie-talkie but when we got there the door was open. At first I thought nothing of it but then as I  walk in I ...

Session 3

So session three is a two week session. The first week, I spent the first week in Day Camp doing lots of messy science experiments which was a blast. We did everything from volcanoes to coke and mentos to elephant toothpaste and DIY Lava Lamps. I loved being back as a general counselor with my eight kids however it was tricky trying to find the balance of who leads what activities. Today I am in the kitchen which is a nice break from the chaos of camp life and I am with one of my new camp friends. Tomorrow I am back as a Unit Leader. I will primarily be with a group that I have heard is a wee-bit problematic but I am looking forward to the challenge. I will also be with one of the sailing units and occasionally windsurfing. You will here more from me maybe this weekend but for now let me leave you with a joke Q: Why can't you tease egg whites? A: They can't take a yolk! That is all for now love you all me

Session one and the one with the weird week

So week one went really well. We had over 70 campers which was chaotic and stressful at times but mostly really good. All of the questions I had about my position were answered when I started doing the work. Last week I was the UL for the Surfers, CapeCod Getaway and All About that Boat which total to around 35 campers and 7 staff members. There were definitely things I could have done better however overall I feel like I did a good job! This week the total camper population is 30 plus or minus a few (of which 8 are day campers and 4 are interns)and they are only here until Wednesday afternoon. So it is oddly quiet in my opinion! I am the UL for Surfers (a different group of campers this week) and Space Bananas (they renamed themselves after they had to combine Fun without Sun and Day trippers) which totals to 11 campers and 5 staff- I KNOW SIGNIFICANTLY LESS RIGHT! Additionally I am essentially the fun aunt to the interns, I put them to bed and then wake them up in the morning and...
